Domestic violence is a form of gender-based violence that happens between two people who are married, dating or living together. Domestic violence mostly affects women because we live in a male-dominated society, where men make the majority of social, economic and political decisions.

Part of the reason violence against women and girls continues is because people are afraid to talk about domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence. For example, some survivors of domestic violence are scared for their safety and do not come forward.
