What is Intersectionality, and Why Does it Matter When Engaging Men and Boys?

Intersectionality recognizes the interconnectedness of social identities and systems of oppression. Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, it highlights how factors like race, gender, class, sexuality, disAbility, religion, and nationality interact to create unique experiences of both privilege and discrimination.

When engaging men and boys in efforts to promote gender equity, applying an intersectional lens is critical. Not all men experience gender, power, or masculinity in the same way. For example, Indigenous men, racialized men, trans men, or men living with disabilities may face structural barriers and forms of discrimination that shape their relationship to systems of power and gender norms differently.

Acknowledging intersectionality helps ensure our work doesn’t reinforce dominant forms of masculinity or overlook the lived realities of men and boys who experience marginalization. It allows us to foster inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally relevant approaches that not only promote gender equity, but also address broader systems of inequality—ultimately contributing to safer, more just communities for everyone.
