Boys are at Risk: Confronting the Rise of Online Misogyny and Harmful Ideologies

White Ribbon’s new report reveals the deep impact of misogynistic and hateful ideologies on the beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of young men and boys— and how these beliefs contribute to harm, discrimination, and violence against women and 2SLGBTQ+ people.

White Ribbon, in partnership with Angus Reid Group, has released the most comprehensive Canadian survey to date on the growing influence of online misogyny, examining its impact on the beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of boys and young men.

Drawing on the voices of parents, educators, and youth-serving professionals, the research report highlights the growing influence of radical ideologies on boys—ideologies that too often lead to harm against women and 2SLGBTQ+ people across communities.

Some key findings include:

73% of educators are concerned about harmful online content targeting boys and young men.

80% of educators have witnessed misogynistic behaviours in the classroom.

84% of Canadians aware of online influencers with misogynistic views say these influencers have a negative impact on boys and young men.

By shining a light on these challenges, we equip educators, parents, and communities with the tools to counter harmful messages and create spaces where boys can grow up with respect, empathy, and equality.

Ending gender-based violence begins with how we support and guide our boys—and your support makes that possible.
