Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Raises $163,000 and Counting!

Just as the walkers rounded the corner from Bay to Queen St, it began to rain. We’re not talking about a soft spring mist, but rather a cold, heavy, November Rain™. T-shirts went up over back of heads, faces pinched tight against the cold, heels slid over the deadly streetcar tracks, but the pack of 600 walkers pressed on.

Making the final turn onto King St the skies cleared and the sun welcomed us all back; feet aching, toes crunched, hair dripping. Spirits were high! It was a fantastic event, made possible by our fantastic hosts Joe Cressy and Mike Layton and by federal NDP leadership candidate Jagmeet Singh, whose words urged compassion, active engagement and listening. From the outset, our sponsors, Barrick, Town Shoes Limited, McCarthy Tetrault, and Corman Feiner gave us the support that we needed in order to make sure everyone had shoes on their feet, tunes to keep them going and a fantastic event space to gather in. And our community partnership with Toronto Men’s Fashion week ensured that the Walk was the most stylish one yet.

Check out the top teams and top fundraisers! They did amazing work. Especially Town Shoes whose employee driven giving, along with its in-store campaign reached across Canada – from the store on Stavanger Drive in St John’s to the store in The Mayfair Shopping Centre in Victoria – and raised an astounding $63,600 (and 96 cents!).

Wednesday, May 31st was the culmination of many weeks of planning, communicating sharing and care. You took the time to tell your friends, family, and co-workers that violence against women is an issue that none of us can afford to be silent about. You shared videos, photos, statistics and articles and you raised $160,000 dollars to ensure that White Ribbon can do more work on your behalf. We are so close to our $200,000 dollar goal, so keep sharing and talking. If you didn’t have a chance to come to the Walk on Wednesday, no worries. There’s still time to help us meet our goal. We’ll get there with your help! Thank you from the bottoms of our still very sore feet!
